A new program, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) is designed for students wanting government careers. This degree, like the others in the School of Public Service, can boast of passionate students, an exceptional faculty, and a relevant, fresh curriculum. The MPA is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. (In fact, our program is the only private university in Illinois accredited by NASPAA.)

Specialization: Public Management This specialization is for those who aspire to become city managers, chief administrative officers, department directors and senior project managers. This specialization rigorously emphasizes the general management of public organizations at all levels by providing learning on the roles, requirements, challenges and processes of running a public organization. It specifically targets the knowledge and skills needed to successfully operate with professional staff, an elected governing board, consultants, and the public in the implementation of broad policy decisions. Legal issues of interest to public managers are also included. Required: MPS 526 Local Government Administration And one of the following MPS 529 Strategic Planning MPS 605 Seminar European Union and NATO (Brussels) (4 hours)
Specialization: Metropolitan Planning and Urban Affairs This specialization is for those who wish to concentrate in working with issues of land use, transportation, economic development, zoning, housing and other community challenges. Thus it emphasizes the technical skills of public administration, where tools of analyses and development techniques are applied in a broad public setting. Best practices are studied for comparative effectiveness and evaluation of alternative designs and models. Required: MPS 571 Metropolitan Planning MPS 574 Community Organizations and Urban Development (4 hours) And one of the following MPS 573 Urban and Community Analysis (4 hours) MPS 604 Field Study in New Orleans (4 hours) MPS 605 Seminar in the European Union and NATO (Brussels) (4 hours)

All Specializations: Internship Requirement (4 hours) Pre-service students must complete MPS 601, Internship (200 hours at an approved site).
