We educate women and men to be effective public service leaders in the global community guided by the values of St. Vincent de Paul

About the School of Public Service

“In our programs, students gain the knowledge and skills — in management, critical thinking, policy analysis, and communication — they need for successful careers in the nonprofit and government sectors. But we teach more than the basics of an MBA; we also nurture each student’s desire to make a difference. We educate students from both sectors together, in a curriculum that’s lively and enlightened, a curriculum designed to open up a world of opportunities, a world of purpose. It’s this rich and practical perspective that distinguishes our graduates.”

J. Patrick Murphy, C.M., Director of the School of Public Service

In some ways, the programs of DePaul’s School of Public Service are best described in superlatives.

With 500 active graduate students, DePaul has the largest MS in public service program in Illinois. In fact, we admit all qualified applicants. Offering an MS degree since 1940, our program is one of the oldest and most well respected in the nation. Today, we offer more M.S. programs — five different degrees — than any other private university. We also offer the most opportunities for international study with courses held in Belgium, China, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and The Philippines. Not surprisingly, our 1600 alumni are working successfully in nonprofit and government organizations all over the U.S. and the world.

In other ways, we are a program that feels more like a family.

Our faculty members — 12 full-time and 19 adjunct instructors — are personally and passionately committed to each student’s progress. School-sponsored activities — such as the Belden Avenue Seminar (a “fireside” gathering in the home of a faculty member, for students, alumni, faculty, and a guest speaker); lectures by prominent academics, authors, or practitioners; newsletters, career forums, and the Public Service Alumni Association — ensure that learning is a dynamic, engaging dialogue. Also, our graduate students take advantage of hundreds of internship and volunteer opportunities, which are supervised, for- credit work in non-profit, governmental, educational, or health care organizations or associations in the U.S. or abroad.

We’re the best of both worlds.

The school’s founder, Dominic Parisi, Ph.D., insisted that people working in nonprofit and the government should be educated together because the two sectors are so interdependent. We still believe that makes a lot of sense. By taking core courses together, our students gain a practical understanding of each sector’s challenges and objectives — an understanding that serves them well in the real world where collaboration leads to positive results.
