Patrick Murphy Dec 3-Dec 18, 2008 Three courses in the School of Public Service will be offered in India in December 2008. Our partners are the DePaul Institute of Science and Technology (DIST), Angamaly and the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), Ahmednagar.
MPS 521: Leadership and Management of Public Service Organizations (4 credits): December 3 - 9, 2008 (Kochi) This course investigates the characteristics of effective leadership in generating social, political, and economic change for the disadvantaged in India. The course is organized around field visits and classroom interactions with Indian students (MHRM students at DIST). Meetings with successful leaders provide an experiential basis for understanding the core concepts of leadership and management from a cross-cultural perspective.
MPS 501 Cross-Sector Analysis (4 credits): December 10 -12 (Kochi) 15-18 (Ahmednagar), 2008 The course examines the contemporary role of the nonprofit, governmental, and proprietary sectors in the context of development management in Southern and Central India. Organized around field visits and classroom and field-based visits, students interact with Indian students in the MSW program at DIST, Angamaly in the state of Kerala in South India and with villagers served by The Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), an innovative rural NGO in Ahmednagar, in the state of Maharashtra in Central India. The course provides an experiential basis for understanding the core concepts of public service organizations from a cross-cultural perspective.
MPS 542 Policy Design and Analysis (4 credits): December 11 -13 (Mumbai) 15-18 (Ahmednagar), 2008 This course offers students the opportunity to examine critical policy design and analysis issues around climate change, environmental policy, and water management issues in developing countries. The systematic examination of critical aspects of policy-making and implementation in India offers students the opportunity to learn from the grassroots through fieldwork. The course is designed around interactions with policy makers in the city of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, followed by fieldwork in villages served by the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), an innovative rural NGO in Ahmednagar, in the state of Maharashtra in Central India (www.wotr.org). Students will work in teams with MSW students from DIST, Angamaly. Each course has two pre-departure orientation seminars in the fall and two re-entry reflection seminars in the winter quarter in Chicago.
