Program overview:
The MPS Manila study abroad program reflects the ongoing institutional dialogues between DePaul University and Adamson University, the third largest Vincentian higher education institution in the world. In line with the international service learning mission of the university and the more recent initiatives in poverty reduction, the Manila Program is a perfect opportunity for student interested in learning about urban poverty, slums dwellers and participatory action research. The program will be developed in collaboration with Adamson University students and faculty and in a service-learning and participatory action research (PAR) partnership with Slums Dwellers International / Homeless International.

Course Overview:
MPS 570: Research Methods
[OR] MPS 604: Special Topics: Participatory Poverty Assessment
This course fulfills the MPS and IPS research methods core course. Students can chose to take this program as an elective and special topic (the syllabus will address the variations and options in assignments and readings).

Course Description:
Research is an essential component in public services management, particularly to organizational development, policy design, and social change. This fundamental course is designed to introduce students to practical application of qualitative, qualitative and other research methods applied to the organizational needs of non-profit and community based organizations engaged in urban poverty reduction. Through case studies and design of participatory action research projects in collaboration with organizations in the Metro Manila-Philippines area, students will be learning how to implement best research methods practices applied to the fields of international public services. In addition to Appreciative Inquiry, Comparative analysis and other research methods, students will focus on the study and application of methods related to the Participatory Poverty Assessment (PPA). Through the collaborative projects implemented in conjunction with Adamson University in Manila, students will learn about participant observations, organizational surveys, practitioners interviews and other useful techniques in public service research.
